Coin Description | Constantius II, AE 16mm, Grade ??, The coin is well centered but the flan is a bit to small causing especially the bottom half of the mintmark to be missing, the coin is also very worn but has a great brown patina. VM 105, RIC VIII Thessalonica 213, RBC 466. |
Obverse | The portrait is of Constantius II a pearl diademed and draped bust looking right. The legend reads DN CONSTANTIVS PF AVG meaning: DN (Dominus Noster /our lord showing the emperor to be the supreme ruler) CONSTANTIVS (his name) PF (Pius Felix / Dutiful and Wise) AVG Augustus which defines him as the emperor. The legend is broken which is a sign of the highest respect and signifies him as the senior Augustus. |
Reverse | The reverse shows Emperor or Virtus standing left, holding a downwards pointing spear (indicating peace) and globe. The legend reads SPES REIPVBLICE which translates as "Hope of the republic/state". |
Mint | The exergue reads SMTS? meaning meaning SM (Sacred Moneta / Sacred Money) TS for the Thessalonica mint at the place of the ? there would have been an officina letter but unfortunately its unreadable. |
