Constantius II 337-361 A.D.
Coin Description | Constantius II, AE 15 mm, Grade ??, The obverse is well centered and shows a lot of detail, the reverse shows sharp details on the top but all detail is gone near the bottom, I think that a weak strike caused the loss of detail on the bottom and not wear. |
Obverse | The portrait is of Constantius II a diademed and draped bust looking right. The legend reads DN CONSTANTIVS PF AVG meaning: DN (Dominus Noster /our lord showing the emperor to be the supreme ruler) CONSTANTIVS (his name) PF (Pius Felix / Dutiful and Wise) AVG Augustus which defines him as the emperor. The legend is broken which is a sign of the highest respect and signifies him as the senior Augustus. |
Reverse | Two soldiers standing on either side of a military standard topped with a chi-rho symbol, each holding a spear and leaning on a shield. The legend reads GLORIA EXERCITVS which translates as "Glory of the Army" or "Glory to the Army". |
Mint | The mint is unfortunately unreadable due to the weak strike. |
The Entire Story | The entire story of this coin would read: Our Lord Constantius II the Dutiful and Wise Augustus who honors the army (or hereby sucks up to the army ). |
