Obverse | The veiled portrait (indicating a deceased person) is of Constantine the Great . The legend reads DV CONSTANTINVS PT AVGG meaning: DV (Divus = divine) used for consecrated and deified emperors. CONSTANTINVS (his name) PT AVGG (Pater (Father) of the Augusti his sons Constans, Constantine II and Constantius II , the double G indicates plural. Deification meant that the deceased was declared a God by a decree of the Senate a custom discontinued after Constantine under influence of Christianity. |
