Coin Description Constantine I the Great posthumous issued by his sons, AE 15mm, Grade ??, the coin well centered but is pretty worn or weakly struck on quite a thin flan. VM 95, RBC 376, RIC VIII Cyzicus 4.
Obverse The veiled portrait (indicating a deceased person) is of Constantine the Great . The legend reads DV CONSTANTINVS PT AVGG meaning: DV (Divus = divine) used for consecrated and deified emperors. CONSTANTINVS (his name) PT AVGG (Pater (Father) of the Augusti his sons Constans, Constantine II and Constantius II , the double G indicates plural. Deification meant that the deceased was declared a God by a decree of the Senate a custom discontinued after Constantine under influence of Christianity.
Reverse

The reverse shows Constantine I in a quadriga with the hand of God extended from above ready to bring the deceased to heaven. There is no legend on the reverse.

Mint The exergue reads SMKε meaning the 5th workshop (epsilon) of the Cyzicus mint.
