Jovian 363 - 364  A.D.

Coin Description Jovian, AE 18mm, Grade ??, The coin is oval in shape measering 18 mm width and 20 mm in length, the orange spots on the reverse obscuring the mintmark where heavy rust encrustation which I removed as much as possible (and as much as I dared ) , RBC 473.
Obverse The portrait is of Jovian a diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust facing left. The legend reads : DN IOVIANVS PF AVG meaning: DN (Dominus Noster /our lord showing the emperor to be the supreme ruler) IOVIANVS (his name) PF (Pius Felix / Dutiful and Wise) AVG Augustus which defines him as the emperor. The legend is broken which is a sign of the highest respect and signifies him as the senior Augustus.
Reverse The reverse shows a wreath with the letters VOT V which translates as: Votis V which means vows for a succesfull reign of 5 years. This derives from the Roman custom of offering vows of a certain sacrifice to the Gods in return for the granting of some favor or wish. During his reign, the emperor would offer vows to safeguard the people and the state for a certain period. When the end of this period was reached (in this case 5 years his quinqennalia) he would make the sacrifices in fulfillment of those vows. The vows were usually a money sacrifice paid to the pagan gods (later this would become the Catholic Church).        (note that they only paid on delivery of the goods )
Mint The exergue reads CONSPA meaning the first workshop, Alpha, of Constantinople minted in 363 A.D.
The Entire Story The entire story of this coin would read: Jovian our lord and emperor who promises vows for a successfull reign in the next five years.
